M&T's 2024 Sustainability Report
We believe we can make the biggest impact by investing in our people, fostering prosperous communities, and preserving our planet. Our approach is built on a foundation of strong governance and continued engagement of our stakeholders.
Fostering prosperity
We approach community investment using a broad portfolio of capabilities meant to create prosperity in the communities we serve. Matching these capabilities to the unique needs of the communities across our footprint helps to ensure that we meet people where they are and provide multiple on-ramps to financial health and wellness. 2024 highlights:
- $2.8 billion committed in financing to projects that include affordable housing
- 1,832 Small Business Administration loans originated, totaling $207.8 million
- Outstanding rating by the Community Reinvestment Act
- Over $58.2 million contributed by M&T and The M&T Charitable Foundation to supporting our communities
- $3.8 billion committed in social sustainable finance loans and investments
Nurturing our people
Our approach to nurturing our people combines two of our Sustainability Priorities: “Attract, Develop, and Retain Talent” and “Understanding Colleague and Customer Experience” to form a framework for support throughout the employee lifecycle. 2024 highlights:
- 245,895 hours reported by M&T staff for volunteering in our communities
- $1.7 million provided for tuition reimbursement for colleagues participating in training external to M&T
- 93% participation by M&T employees in M&T's 401(k) plan
- 675,247 hours of training for M&T colleagues through M&T Learning courses

Preserving our planet by financing a sustainable future
At M&T, we know that sustainable and prosperous communities are an integral part of our long-term success, and climate change is a widespread challenge to achieving this. We seek to understand both global and local concerns and prioritize opportunities to play a part in tackling climate change. 2024 highlights:
- $1.2 billion committed in environmental sustainable finance loans and investments
- 95% of our five-year, $1 billion commitment to renewable energy projects achieved
- 15% year-over-year reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- $774,500 contributed by The M&T Charitable Foundation to environmental organizations and conservation program
Stewarding our principles of governance
With sound governance structures underpinning everything we do, we are well positioned to advance our sustainability priorities and create long-term value for our organization and our stakeholders. 2024 highlights:
- 5,870 courses on sustainability completed by personnel
- 94% of directors met the criteria for independence required by the New York Stock Exchange® as well as our Corporate Governance Standards
- 100% of responses to complaints made to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau were timely
- 89% of employees believe the company shows a commitment to ethical business decisions and conduct
Report of independent accountants – 2024 Assurance Statement
We engaged a third party to perform a limited assurance engagement over certain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and electricity consumption metrics within our inventory for the 2024 reporting year.
